Becoming A Pistol Shooter
Competitive pistol shooting is one of the fastest growing sports in Queensland
Becoming a pistol shooter is a straight forward process, you will need to satisfy a number of requirements for Weapons Licensing Queensland:
If you do not already own a Category H Weapons license you will need to complete a QP-515. You will need to print it out and lodge it at the local police station. The police will submit this form to Weapons Licensing on your behalf. This typically takes around 4 weeks to get your results.
You will be issued with a statement of eligibility to join a pistol club by Queensland Police.
You must achieve a statement of attainment to use a Category H firearm lawfully, safely and responsibly. (NAT11029005) Local training organisations linked at the bottom of the page.
You will need your membership application to the club sponsored by 2 club members. We encourage you to come to the club on a Saturday or Sunday, meet the members and introduce yourself. You will be provided with an application for membership.
Your application will be presented to the existing members over a short period for member approval.
Satisfying these criteria, you will now have the opportunity to become a financial member of the club.
This will start a 6 month probationary period where you will have the opportunity to participate in matches at the club and try different calibers and pistols.
You will need to participate in at least 3 matches at the club so use this opportunity to find out what you like and what matches you would like to compete in.
After 6 months and participating in 3 matches you will be able to apply for your Category H license. You will now need to do the following:
Get a club representative/executive to fill out a QP-518A form with you.
Complete an online license application here and submit your completed QP-518A, your statement of attainment (NAT11029005) and participation records. You will later be required to attend an Australia Post to have a passport quality photo taken.
OR bring a completed license application, your completed QP-518A, your statement of attainment (NAT11029005) and records of your participation records to an Australia Post and just get it all processed in one go.
If you have ever been charged with a traffic offence it would be a good idea to get a complete traffic history report done on yourself as you will need to submit details about any finable offences you may have committed.
Sports shooting is a genuine reason to own a category H firearm. To maintain your genuine reason to own your firearm you will need to participate in at least 6 competition shoots per year. The only location you can legally shoot your firearm will be at an approved pistol shooting range.
